Alternative — check your home contents policy first

Before buying separate gadget cover, check your home contents policy. Many policies include:

If home contents already covers what you need, separate gadget insurance is duplication.

Manufacturer extended warranty — rarely worth it

Manufacturer or retailer extended warranties on white goods (John Lewis, Currys, etc.) are usually poor value. Statistical repair rates over 5 years often below the warranty premium. Consumer rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 already give you cover for "not of satisfactory quality" for up to 6 years.

Decision framework

  1. Check home contents first — is the item covered including accidental damage?
  2. Check credit card or bank account — some include gadget/mobile cover.
  3. Item value under £150? — often self-insure (replacement cost lower than 2 years of premium).
  4. Item high-value + heavily used (kids' iPhone, laptop for work) → specialist gadget cover.

Frequently asked questions

Is boiler cover worth it?

Depends on your boiler's age. New boilers rarely fail; old boilers fail often. £15-£20/month cover ≈ £180-£240/year. A single boiler replacement costs £2,000-£4,000.

Do I need separate mobile phone insurance?

Only if your home contents policy doesn't include personal possessions cover 'away from home' — check the policy schedule.

Can I insure appliances after they break?

No. Cover only applies to future incidents. Pre-existing faults are excluded.

What voids gadget insurance?

Unauthorised modifications, jailbreaking (mobiles), damage from misuse, leaving items visible in a vehicle.
