UK "index fund" typically means an OEIC (Open-Ended Investment Company) — priced once daily. ETFs are the exchange-traded equivalent — priced continuously. Both track indices passively. Key UK index funds include Vanguard LifeStrategy, Fidelity Index World, HSBC FTSE All-World Index, and iShares UK Equity Index.
See our ETFs vs index funds guide.
HL supports the full UK index fund universe including Vanguard LifeStrategy (very popular UK beginner default), Fidelity Index World, HSBC FTSE All-World Index, L&G International Index Trust, and many others. Fund dealing is free. Research library rates individual funds.
Fees: 0.45% custody on funds (tiered down at higher balances). Free fund dealing. Regular monthly investing supported.
Best for: UK investors committed to index funds (rather than ETFs) who value having every major UK index fund available under one login.

0.15% platform fee capped at £375/year. Only Vanguard products — but LifeStrategy is here, at the cheapest UK route. Also LifeStrategy ETF classes (Acc/Dist), Target Retirement funds, and single-region trackers.
Best for: LifeStrategy-committed UK investors.
InvestEngine doesn't offer index funds (OEICs) — it's ETF-only. But most index funds have ETF equivalents. Vanguard LifeStrategy has no ETF version, so LifeStrategy users can't switch. But Fidelity Index World's ETF equivalent (Vanguard FTSE All-World, VWRP) is available.
For investors who could equally use index funds or ETFs, InvestEngine's 0% platform fee on ETFs beats HL's 0.45% on funds by a meaningful margin.

For committed index-fund investors: Hargreaves Lansdown for widest range and research, or Vanguard Investor UK for LifeStrategy-specific. For those open to equivalent ETFs at lower cost: InvestEngine. Both HL and InvestEngine are approved PennyWise partners.

Same investment approach (tracking an index) but different structures. Index funds price once daily; ETFs trade continuously.
Not as a single ETF. LifeStrategy is only available as an OEIC fund.
Vanguard Investor UK — 0.15% capped at £375/year. Cheaper than HL's 0.45% for LifeStrategy specifically.
Similar outcomes. LifeStrategy is one fund, auto-rebalanced, with ~25% UK bias. VWRP is one ETF, ~4% UK, slightly cheaper on cheap platforms.
Yes. UK index funds and OEICs are fully ISA-eligible.
