How a regular saver actually works

The headline AER is the annual rate. But because interest accrues on each deposit from the day it lands, the average balance across the term is roughly half the final balance. So on a 12-month saver at 6% AER with £200/month, you earn about £78, not £144 (6% of total £2,400 deposited).

When regular savers are worth it

When you can commit the full monthly amount every month, and the headline rate materially beats top easy-access rates. Not when you may need the money early or might miss a month — many providers close the account or forfeit interest.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my interest lower than headline rate times total deposited?

Because interest accrues on each deposit from the day it lands. The effective rate on your total deposited is roughly half the AER on a 12-month saver.

Is regular saver interest taxable?

Yes, unless inside a Cash ISA. It counts towards your Personal Savings Allowance.

Can I miss a month?

Depends on the provider — many close the account or reduce interest if you miss payments.
