The silent killer of returns

A 1-1.5% fee sounds small. Over 30 years at 7% gross returns, it can shrink your final pot by 25-35%. That is years of extra working life.

Frequently asked questions

Are higher-fee funds worth it if they outperform?

On average, no. Across decades of UK and global data, the majority of actively managed funds underperform their benchmark after fees. Some beat it, but you cannot reliably identify which in advance.

What about financial adviser fees?

Platform/fund fees are what this calculator measures. If a 1% adviser fee prevents one costly behavioural mistake per decade, it may be worth it. If the adviser just puts you in high-fee funds, it is a double cost.

Is Vanguard really cheaper?

For Vanguard-only portfolios yes (platform fee 0.15%, fund 0.1-0.3%). But InvestEngine is 0% platform fee for ETFs and typically beats Vanguard overall.
