Snowball vs Avalanche

Snowball targets smallest balance first (psychological wins). Avalanche targets highest APR first (mathematically optimal). Snowball pays slightly more interest total but has a better dropout-prevention record in behavioural studies.

If the APRs across your debts are similar, the difference is negligible. If one debt is at 29% APR and another at 6%, the avalanche saves significantly.

How this calculator works

Each month: pay the FCA minimum (1% of balance plus interest, floor £5) on every debt. Any leftover from your budget goes to the smallest-balance debt. Once that is cleared, its payment is added to the next-smallest. Repeat until all clear.

Frequently asked questions

What if my budget doesn't cover all minimums?

This signals you need to speak to a free debt adviser. Try StepChange or Citizens Advice before taking any further credit.

Should I pay 0% debts at minimum?

Yes, mathematically. But if a 0% deal ends soon, factor in the rate it reverts to.
